The purpose of this workshop is for you to discover bamboo and learn some fundamental techniques so that you can make small objects or furniture of your own design after getting some practise. On this 2 day course, you will make two items of your choice from among four proposed options (a lantern, a shelf, a picture frame, a small table). If you wish, you can bring the items that you created back home with you.
Bamboo is a magical material. It is strong, flexible, light, beautiful, surprisingly quite easy to craft. Bamboo is a very environmentally friendly material as it is more quickly renewable than timber. Nowadays it can be easily purchased in many countries, including North America and Europe, where the number of bamboo nurseries and plantations continue to grow.
This workshop is mostly based on practise and includes the following topics:
- Introduction to bamboo: the material and its properties
- Visit to a nearby plantation and bamboo cutting
- Introduction to the safe use of tools (machete, axe, saw and electric drill)
- Cutting, drilling bamboo
- Joining techniques
- Bamboo non-toxic treatment,
- Dying, painting, and preserving bamboo
