Week-end course: earth building, simplicity and sustainable living

2021 Dates: Week-end 1 : 20 – 21 February or 6 – 7 March; Week-end 2: 27 – 28 February or 13 – 14 March. Other dates to be announced later.

This workshop is an opportunity to reflect on self-reliance and living with simplicity, as well as learning earth building skills.

Course schedule and content

**** WEEK-END 1

SATURDAY
Classroom session: Understand how a house made of natural materials can be cool in hot climates/seasons but warm in cold climates/seasons with low or no energy consumption. Overview of passive cooling/heating techniques, natural insulation etc. You will learn further by observing and then commenting on the land buildings.

Practise: Earth as building material, testing the soil. Making sun dried earth bricks (‘adobe’); make a wall with adobe bricks.

Evening activity:  Relax after dinner or watch together short films on natural building, simple living, or self-reliance.

SUNDAY

Practise (morning): What is wattle-and-daub? Preparing the wattle, the mix, making a wall

Practise (afternoon): Plastering. Making samples to determine the best ratio, plastering for strengthening/protecting the walls.

**** WEEK-END 2
SATURDAY
Practise (morning): What is Cob building? Preparing the mix; making Cob walls and small furniture (bench) or earth sculpture
Practise (afternoon): Earth Plastering for renovating a wall.

Evening activity: Relax after dinner or watch together short films on natural building, simple living, or self-reliance.

SUNDAY

Practise: Earth plastering: finishing coat; plastering with hands and several tools

Optional half-day sessions (Friday 26 February at BaanDinDoi Chiang Rai, Friday 12 March at Earth Home Chiang Mai):

If you are not available for the ‘week-end 1’, join us one day before week-end 2 to catch up !

1 – Classroom session: Inputs on thermal mass, bio-climatic design. Practise session: soil testing.

2 – Adobe bricks technique: Preparing the right mix, making the bricks, laying & leveling bricks.

Price: 26 February, Chiang Rai: 800 bahts for one half-day session and 1,200 bahts for both.

12 March, Chiang Mai: 1,000 bahts for one half-day session and 1,500 bahts for both.

After the course

  • You will be given printed handouts and the digital version of the training materials including additional documents (PDF files, Videos) and useful links if you wish to learn further
  • You will be proposed to participate to our building projects (maintenance, extensions or new buildings) in our land (Chiang Rai). This will allow you to get more practise (contribution for food and simple accommodation: 400 bahts per day)

The course will be held at ‘Baan Din Doi’, 30 minutes from Chiang Rai city and will have a maximum of 6 participants.

Price per week-end: 3,400 bahts (incl. course, meals, overnight stay in a simple tent). WIFI available.

6 – 7 & 13-14 March

Workshop organized by BaanDinDoi and hosted by ‘Earth Home Thailand’ near Chiang Mai (www.earthhomethailand.com), with a maximum of 6 participants. Price per week-end: 4,200 bahts (incl. course, meals, night in a room made out of Earth bricks). WIFI available.
